We have planned a Dental Charity Trek in Nepal in 2010. This is a great adventure experience towards remote local villages. You follow dental professionals to treat children as they set up a basic dental clinic.
We welcome every trekker that wish to be involved in the Charity project and give a genuine help to village children in a beautiful region.
Reach Summit will donate the equivalent of your annual membership fee to the Dental team when booking for the Charity Trek.
Today, Dr Mingma Sherpa would wish to answer some questions posted by trekkers who wish to join. I trust his answers will help. Please, keep the questions coming:
Q : Simple and Surgical extractions ? Abcesses common ?
R : We don't do surgical extraction as we work in remote village with no light but we do extraction only when they are simple. We keep our work simple.
Q : Other injuries and illnesses non-dental that we could help with?
R : There may be some trauma case or minor injury but we can only do First-AID, so we need a first-aid kit. Nevertheless, we can do screening for diabetic and hypertension in the village.
Q : What are our limits for equipment that I may be able to help with?
R : Trekkers are more than welcome to bring what they wish to bring. Medical supply can be taken back with them or donate to Smilehigh's office in Kathmandu after the trip.
Q : What region does it look like would be best for next fall ? I would like to be in Everest, but will go where there's need.
R - Reach Summit : The itinerary has been designed to Langtang, North from Kathmandu city. It is a remote area where villages are often out of reach due to landslide or road blockage. However, Everest region is another alternative option in case Langtang could not be reached. The final itineray will be validated early january 2010 with Dr Mingma Sherpa. Thank you for your patience.
Q : What instruments are needed?
R : Regarding instruments, we seem to have what we need. Nonetheless, trekkers can bring anything they would like : local Anaesthic cartridge, GIC, composite kit etc ... Thank you.
Q : Do you prescribe antibiotics? Pain medication ? Need local anesthesia ?
R : We do prescribe antiboitic and pain killer for those who need depending in cases we treat.
Q : What is the ideal team in terms of dentists, physicians, nurses, etc...?
R :The ideal team would again depends on how many would like to come. We have no team limit...
