Mt Kilimanjaro vs Everest Base Camp

www.reachsummit.com | Kilimanjaro climb and Everest Base Camp trek

At first glance, what does those two destinations get in common? Well apparently nothing as Mt Kilimanjaro stands in Africa, Northern Tanzania at the border with Kenya and Everest Base Camp lies (on the most popular route) in Nepal.

Well, because of altitude, and its effects on the body, some similarities can be found though.

Mt Kilimanjaro is at 5895m altitude. It is an altitude trek that covers 5 stages of vegetation, from rain forest to alpine desert. The trip is a slow pace altitude trek that should include at least 1 day acclimatisation to allow the body to adapt to altitude. The Summit bid is the toughest part of the climb. You start at midnight and your body feels the effects of the lack of oxygen. If you are not properly trained, acclimatized or fit, altitude sickness can play havoc on your determination and strong will to reach the summit. It is a long night with a very long day on the way back. But when achieved, only good memories remain.

Everest Base Camp from Nepal starts from Lukla airport after a 45mn flight from Kathmandu. It is a 14/16 days trek to the Base Camp, depending on the extra days of acclimatization included in your itinerary. The track is well marked and the sceneries are one of the most amazing you could experience. It is steadily uphill trail all the way though and reaching Gorakshep is a very long day along a huge moraine. From the village, Base Camp is only 3/4 hours walk on a good pace. The Base Camp is a vast glacier where expedition tents are scattered on pieces of ice (from April to May only). To get a good view of the summit, you have to climb Kalapattar (alt. 5545m). You start at night , the cold is penetrating and you may suffer from altitude sickness. At day break, the sun rise from the summit of Everest. The panorama is magic and the reward is worth the effort.
